~ Jeremiah 22:16
Annual recurring charge
Many of our brothers and sisters in our hemisphere live in extreme poverty.
Many of them and their children go to bed hungry because they do not have enough resources for food.
Many of them cannot buy medicine for themselves or their children.
Many of them drink water full of parasites and bacteria.
Many attend schools where less than 34% of teachers are qualified to teach and gang violence takes the lives of children.
Now that you do know you may ask “Why does God allow it? God is asking Christians the same question, “Why do we allow it?”
Not knowing has never been an excuse.
For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in.
~ Matthew 25:35
The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’ “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
~ Matthew 25:40-46
The purpose of the I Was Hungry ministry is to address the problem of hunger in the church.
We are a very generous fellowship of churches helping the poor and needy around the world, however, in our zeal to do this many of our own brothers and sisters who are going hungry daily inadvertently got overlooked.
We are addressing this issue in Central America through the distribution of food vouchers to feed the hungry. We pray that this will be duplicated throughout the rest of the world.
This is the first phase of our long term vision that will include training and equipping of Christian families be able to fish for themselves, resulting in greater income that will allow churches to help the communities around them.
We currently support programs to teach English classes as this ability increases earning potential in these countries.
We visit these countries through Hope worldwide Community Service Brigades to provide medical attention, medicine and vitamins to the poorest of our brothers and sisters in Central America. Join us and see first hand the overwhelming need.
This is only the beginning of the vision as we pray this will be a movement that will spread throughout the world. Together we can create the change so we will never hear ” I was hungry and you did not give me something to eat.”
For around $1.50 a day/ $11 a week or approximately $44 monthly, you can connect with a family in Central America. $40 will purchase a food voucher to be given monthly. $4 a person is used to supplement the income of a low income individual who administers the program in each country.
You will get a picture and contact information of the family you are helping. You are encouraged to communicate with them or you can choose to stay anonymous.
Over the last three years through the generosity of donors like yourself we have help feed over 130 families on a monthly basis. We had over 30 families graduate out of the program, and replaced by new families,as many were able to take care of themselves or have passed away.
To the families receiving assistance, the food vouchers has made the difference between eating daily and going hungry. Some have been able to use the money they would have used for food to buy medicine that is helping to save lives.
These families were not asking for help from the church, but praying to God for their food needs to be met. They were surprised and broke down in tears upon receiving their first vouchers and gave God the glory for answering their cries.
It’s also more than the food; they are encouraged and uplifted knowing that we care. They want to know and communicate with us as their family in Christ. We have had people on both sides translate each other’s messages and it is becoming easier for them as it is helping them learn English. It has helped us obey Matthew 25:35 as we are only doing what God has commanded on an issue that has eternal consequences, salvation! Some of the families include widows and orphans of which the bible tells us in James 1:27 – Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
We are making a difference but as a small group of 300 with the help of brothers and sisters from across the US, we need your help to change the Kingdom of God, so someday we will hear I was hungry and you fed me.
How many families will receive help?Currently there are over 100 families in different regions of Honduras and Guatemala.
Will we know who we adopt? You will get a picture and contact information of the family you are helping. You are encouraged to communicate with them or you can choose to stay anonymous.
Will I be able to communicate with my adopted family? Our administrator in Honduras and in Guatemala will coordinate with our team of volunteers in Central Jersey to send you information on the best way to communicate with your family,
whether it’s through email, Facebook or snail mail (depending on computer access). We are also encouraging participation in the Community Service Brigades which will give you the opportunity to meet the families that you are supporting.
How much is going to the family and how much towards administration?Of your $44 contribution, $40 will go directly towards the purchase of a food card for your family. The
remaining $4 will be used to pay a disciple to administer the program in the home country, improving the
life for that disciple’s family as well.
Is anything being done for these families besides providing food?We are asking families to enroll in ESL classes provided by Hope worldwide Honduras so they can attain a
better job. English speakers can earn up to 4 times the minimum wage. In addition there is a program in
development to provide a Microsoft Certification.
Will we be helping in other countries? Our goal is to expand this ministry throughout Central America and Caribbean and as we are able to fully fund current countries of Honduras and Guatemala we will be going into other third world countries.
Who is administering the program in the U.S.?The Central Jersey Church of Christ is administering the program at no charge as a ministry of the church.
How do I get involved and send my donations?
